What will you do if your son is comatose and there is no certainty that he will recover from it?
Well, this is exactly what happened to Mandy Suzanne Smith and what she did was the most “courageous” thing that any mother would do in that situation.
All it needed was an open bible in a hotel room. She just came from the hospital where her son was in a medically-induced coma and the bible in the hotel room was opened to John 9, which recounted the story of Jesus healing a blind man. Right then and there, Mandy felt at peace.
But her ordeal did not really start there. It all started one fateful day in February.
On February 21, 2014, Mandy picked up her son Zachary from school. Zachary said that he had a rash from poison oak on his foot and that his eye was feeling heavy too. As a remedy, Mandy put cream on it and they didn’t think much about it. But the following day, the rash had spread and Zachary had fever too. They went to the hospital where she was told that Zachary had just contracted some form of viral infection and was sent home with prescription. But Zachary’s condition did not get any better. His eyes had turned red. His lips had turned red too and began to crack. They rushed him to another hospital where Zachary was diagnosed to have the Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
The Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), named after the two pediatricians who wrote about it, is a life-threatening skin condition. It is caused by, among others, medications such as lamotrigine.
It turns out Zachary was indeed taking lamotrigine and had a late onset of severe allergic reaction to it. In her Facebook post, Mandy described the disease as being burned from inside out, which is what exactly happened to Zachary. On the 6th day, his skin was already coming off. It was very painful for Zachary. Mandy was in agony too. This was also the day that Mandy was told that Zachary needed to be put in a coma so that his entire skin can be removed, then he will be wrapped in a material called biobrane until he grows new skin
All of these happened on the day that Mandy got to read John 9 from an open bible in her hotel room.
A similar story of Jesus healing a blind man is also in Luke 18:35-43.
As he approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” Then he shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet; but he shouted even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and ordered the man to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, praised God.
Today, Jesus asks us the same question, “What do you want me to do for you?” We just have to answer Him, and trust Him. Because, as Mandy testified, He will deliver. God will have mercy on us.
Zachary awoke from his coma after one month. And when he awoke, he told his family that he was not really asleep the entire time. He said that he was being held by a strong angel named Samson. And his grandmother who had passed away was also taking care of him.
Today, Zachary’s health has been fully restored.
Glory and Praise to God!
“I know that we all think nothing like this can ever happen to us or our children, but it can. You never know what situation you might find yourself in, but no matter the situation, give it to God. He is mighty and He is faithful and He will be there.”
