Restarting After A Flood
Last weekend a storm hit Ellicott City, Maryland; being prone to flooding, experienced one of the most devastating flash floods in its history.
But, as you know, from disasters emerge heroes and the same was true for Jason Barnes, 36, who rescued fellow resident Jamie Knight, 29, by forming a human chain to pull the latter out just before the flood swept her car away.
You will see from the video that Jason initially tried to rescue Jamie by himself but only to be carried away by the flood. But he didn’t give up and tried once more, by initiating a human chain with 3 other people. This time, he was successful.
What the video does not show you though is that at the time Jason came to rescue Jamie, his toy store, his dream business which he just bought in June, has been wiped out by the flood too. He lost his business (which was his family’s only source of living) and his car, even his shoes, in the flood. He almost his life too.
He said wistfully, “I threw everything I had into this to get things rolling,” he said. “And two months later it’s all floating down the river.” But he has faith it will all come back. His positive attitude is simply inspiring. “Others lost so much more.” he said. “At the end of it, I got to walk away.”
In post-flood interviews, Jason humbly said that he was not a hero and that he was just “the last link on a very strong chain.” He also said that the storm showed “how good humanity is,” as stories of rescues circulated in abundance. “You do what you need to do to help someone,” Jason told CNN.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Jason and its goal of $20K has been surpassed in just 4 days. Truly this is a testimony to Jesus’ pronouncement that “…those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:25)
Jason acknowledges that he is now on the receiving end and is overwhelmed with all the support going his way.
We wish him well as he rebuilds his dream.
“What you should want most is God’s kingdom and doing what he wants you to do. Then he will give you all these other things you need.” Matthew 6:33
