Punta Hermosa in Lima, Peru is known to be a surfer’s paradise. But for one man, this place will prove to be unforgettable as he almost drowned there if not for the heroic of act of a stranger.
This happened during a photo shoot in the area. A man drowning was unexpectedly caught on camera. Despite being a surfer, he was having cramps at the time and couldn’t bring himself to swim.
Upon seeing the drowning man, another surfer did not wait a minute longer. He picked up his board, ran hurriedly to the beach, and swam to rescue the drowning stranger. The way he picked up his board is reminiscent of when Jesus told a paralytic man to “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” (John 5:8) which the paralytic man readily did.
Punta Hermosa (which means “beautiful point”) is a popular surfing spot. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west so its waves are high, the current is strong, and the water is deep. Its conditions are perfect for surfing but not for rescuing. But the unnamed hero fought through all these conditions. He weathered the long paddle out (about 350 meters) to help a stranger in need. He risked his own life to save another.
The name of the rescuer has not been revealed but he is a hero nonetheless.
If you were in this situation, what would you do? Will you also risk your life for people you don’t know? Believe it or not, all of us are capable of doing brave heroic acts. John 15:13 states that, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This is what Jesus did for us. Will you do it too? How are you “dying” everyday for others? You need not wait to do big heroic acts as not everyone is called to do such. You can still be a hero to others by doing small acts of kindness everyday. God will supply you with the grace to do so.
